Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index – Food for thought for Investors and Consumers

Animal farming and protein production is a complex sector worth over 1.6 trillion in revenue.  Demand for meat is growing globally, yet the industry contributes to some of the most serious systemic challenges faced by our world today.  Animal agriculture contributes to more GHG emissions than the entire global transport sector; it uses the majority of the world’s most critically important antibiotics; it is responsible for over 80% of Amazon deforestation and pollutes our soils and freshwater systems with poor waste and manure management.  Scrutiny of the intensive animal farming has been increasing over the past five years since FAIRR’s inception, the latest iteration of the Coller FAIRR Protein Producer Index shows that much more still needs to be done to address environmental risks but also demonstrates improvement, as 87% of companies had a better score in 2021 vs. the prior year.

Following the COP26 announcements addressing Net Zero Commitments, Deforestation Pledges, Methane Reduction Targets, and Innovation, we will explore the role that global protein producers can play in achieving ambitious climate objectives and the importance of data and transparency as an essential component in risk assessment for investors. We will focus on the following themes:

  • Waste management: what is the impact on global methane ambitions and how can producers better manage potential pollutants?
  • Financial and regulatory risks: how can intensive animal production anticipate and mitigate their exposure?
  • Environmental concerns: what is the future role of animal agriculture to respond to those issues?
  • Reporting and traceability: what can improvements on life cycle management and transparency bring to investors?

We will explore these and many other questions with

The FAIRR Initiative, which was founded by Jeremy Coller in 2015, is a collaborative investor network focusing on environmental, social, and governance (ESG) risks and opportunities in the global food sector. It is currently supported by investors and asset owners with over $47 trillion in combined AUM. Through cutting-edge research, FAIRR helps its members to navigate the risks posed by an increasingly vulnerable livestock sector and enables them to exercise their influence as responsible stewards of capital.
